| The main section of the exam will include material
covered in the readings and class discussions since the second exam. This section
will include objective questions to be answered on a ScanTron sheet (multiple
choice and true/false questions), an essay topic on the Gospels (see below in section D under Strategies for Study), and one or more questions on Paul (see below). This main section may also include a map
of Palestine at the time of Jesus and one of the Roman Empire at the time
of Paul. In addition to the main section, there will be a comprehensive section consisting of one essay question. That question is presented below in section G under Strategies for Study. |

Content |
About seventy percent (75%) of the exam will be
taken from issues discussed both in class and in the assigned readings.
About ten percent (10%) will come directly from the class discussions, and about fifteen percent (15%) from assigned readings that were not discussed in class.
The chapter on the Historical Jesus in Harris' book (chapter 11, pages 476-510) was not assigned. All material on the Historical Jesus will be taken directly from the online quiz on Jesus of Nazareth. You do not need to study anything beyond that quiz on this topic. While very little material on the exam will come from Chapter 13 (pages 575-604), "The General Epistles and Some Visions of End Time," you should be sure to take the online quiz on The Genearl Epistles and the Revelation to John several times. The book of Acts will be included on the exam, but it will be covered very lightly. All of the questions on Acts will be based on similar questions in the online quiz on Acts. Review pages 512-527 only very lightly, just enough to see why the answers given in the online quiz are correct. |

Answer all of the questions posted on the course website . | ||||||||||||||||||||||
As you answer these questions, think about the main topics discussed in each chapter of Harris' book and the main topics discussed in the relevant class discussion. What are the major issues that you have read about since the last exam? What are the major issues that have been discussed in class. You can take these quizzes online and get feedback on your answers. |

Review your class notes.
Use the Discussion Outlines posted on the course website to help you find places where information may be missing from your class notes, then ask to look at a classmate's notes to get any missing information. You should have detailed notes on "Israel in the Hellenistic Age," "First Century Judaisms," "The Four Gospels," and "Pauline and Deuteropauline Views on Women's Roles." You will have notes on only some of the topics listed in the outline for "Paul: Apostle to the Gentiles." For the material on that topic, you will need to consult chapter 12 of the book by Harris (especially pages 527-574). |
| C. |
Review the assigned readings |
You will need to review Israel in the Hellenistic Age (online) as well as pages 368-475, 511-587, and 592-600 of the book by Harris. As you review the assigned readings, pay special attention to the essay topics discussed below. |
| D. |
Review terms, concepts, and dates.
Review any significant terms, concepts, and dates that you find in your notes or the assigned readings. If a term or date was written on the board in class, you should know what it means. As you review your notes and the assigned readings, circle any terms you do not recognize. If necessary, look them up using the glossary and index at the back of Harris' book. Look at how each term was used in context in the readings and the class discussions. It is not necessary to memorize a definition of each term. It is necessary for you to be familiar enough with most terms to understand them in a question on the exam. Some example terms are provided at the end of each of the printable question files posted on the web site. You must view the printable files to see these lists of terms. These lists are not available at the end of the automated quizzes to be taken online. Review Tables 10.2 (pages 392—393) and 10.4 (page 404) of the textbook. Compare the dates in these lists with your class notes. Which dates do you think will be most important? |

Prepare a one-page response to the following topic on the Gospels. |
As you prepare the following essay, take the two online quizzes on the Gospels several times. These quizzes will not help you write the essay, but they will help insure that you learn other things about the Gospels that you will need to know for the objective portion of the exam. As you work on the online questions, ask yourself what material from your notes and the readings are relevant to the following topic on the Gospels? You should be able to write a well-informed one-page essay on the topic stated below. Most of what you will need to write this essay should be found in your class notes, but your answer should also demonstrate that you have completed the assigned readings.
| F. |
Prepare half-page responses to the following two topics covered in the assigned readings on Paul. |
The following two topics on Paul are based entirely on the assigned readings. Use pages 538-563 of the book by Harris as well as the online reading assignment to help you prepare a half-page response to each one. Your response to these two topics should come almost entirely from the assgined readings. Even if one of these two topics does not appear on your copy of the exam, objective questions related to that topic will appear. Make sure you have taken the online quizzes on Paul's letters several times each. Explain Paul’s views on eschatology. How does his eschatological perspective affect the ethical advice he gives in his letters? Give specific examples. Explain Paul’s view of Justification by faith. According to Paul, how does one find a right relationship with God? In which letters is this issue discussed? |
| G. |
For the Comprehensive portion of the Exam, prepare a one-page response to the following topic. |
What have major biblical scholars said about how the Bible came to be a written document? As you think about how to answer this question, keep in mind that your answer should not express agreement or disagreement with the scholars who have discussed these issues. The objective of your essay is simply to demonstrate that you have understood what they are saying. |

Review the geography discussed
in class and in the assigned readings. Using the maps on pages 455 and 524 of Harris' book, be prepared to locate the following regions and
cities. |

Organize a Study Group |
Students who participate in study groups typically score
higher on exams. Even a very strong student will increase her
score by having to explain the material to a weaker one, and weaker students
will learn from the experience and knowledge of stronger ones. Use the
space below to record the names and email addresses of a few other students
with whom you can share the work of preparing for the exam.
