The fonts presented on this page are either shareware or freeware and are available in versions for both Windows and MacIntosh. Most Unicode fonts also work for Linux.

Displaying Greek Text on the Web

Unicode

The list of unicode fonts is constantly increasing, and support for Ancient Greek is included in a vast number of these fonts. They work well in all of the major web browsers and in all three of the most popular computer operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux). This is definitely the wave of the future.

For a list of unicode fonts that include the Greek character set, see the Thesaurus Lingua Graecae site.

Utilities for Converting Text to Unicode

If you do not know what Unicode is, visit Sean Redmond's Unicode page. The page includes a utility to convert texts written in any of several traditional fonts to Unicode. It also includes a brief introduction to unicode.

James Naughton has provided a great little utility for creating unicode Greek text for display on the web. It allows you to type your text using a standard western keyboard and have the text converted on the fly to unicode Greek! It will even let you specify the font you want it to use.

Fonts for Download

  • Fonts from Society of Biblical Literature

The SBL is currently developing a new series of high-quality fonts for digital and print use. Hebrew was the first in the series to be released and is already available. SBL Greek and Latin are in development.

While we wait for the SBL Greek unicode font, the legacy SP Fonts, developed by James R. Adair, are still available.

  • The SIL Greek Font System

SIL's original Greek Font System, developed in conjunction with the UNESCO B@bel Initiative, was an elegant high quality system of fonts that has now been superceded by Unicode-encoded Greek fonts, such as the two below:

    • Galatia SIL
    • Galatia SIL is the second release of the Biblical Greek font package from SIL International. The typeface is almost identical to the original SIL Galatia font, but is now encoded according to Unicode 3.1.

    • Gentium
    • The Gentium font family is freely available. The design is highly readable, reasonably compact, and visually attractive. Gentium supports both polytonic and monotonic Greek, including a number of alternate forms.

  • Rod Decker's Galilee Font

Decker's Galilee Font is now available in UNICODE Encoding.

  • William D. Mounce's Teknia Fonts Page
  • William D. Mounce's Teknia Font is needed for the website accompanying Basics of Biblical Greek. It also works well for word processing, and its current version also works for the web.

  • Fonts in Cyberspace: Greek

This page, formerly maintained by the Summer Institue of Linguistics, offers a wonderful variety of older Greek Fonts, including one for Linear B. Many are free or shareware, but a few are commercial fonts requiring a liscensing fee. The page is no longer being updated.

  • GoGreece
  • GoGreece provides some older fonts that work well on legacy versions of Windows and Mac. The instructions they provide for installing them apply to these older operating systems.
